The 1919 Chicago Race Riots exposed racial inequality in housing and job policies. In Chicago, the violence sparked an immediate and intense reaction, as people were killed, buildings were destroyed, and fear spread. In response, Chicago pursued reform by creating the Chicago Commission on Race Relations to investigate the riot and help prevent future ones. The riot also strengthened long-term activism by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Although there were decades of struggle, the riot helped fuel long-term activism against racism that eventually led the city to greater racial justice.
